Alcoholism Effects on Children

From Friend of Bill W
Children need not consume alcohol in order to be affected by the disease alcoholism.

Example of a harmful alcoholism effect on children

This story is true:

Dad the alcoholic comes home from work at 2.00am although finish time was 5.00pm.

Dad is married and has two children. Everyone is fast asleep - but not for long.

The eldest child wakes up to the sound of dads loud voice yelling at the poor co dependent mother. The youngest child (still a toddler) starts crying screams of fear and terror. The eldest boy pokes his face around the corner of the doorway to see his mother holding her bloody nose and crying.

Dad is sitting at the dining table holding a knife to his chest saying that he will kill himself. Mum convinces him to not to kill himself. The dad says that he needs to go to the shed to prepare for work the next day. So he goes to the shed and does not come back until 3.00am the next morning drunk as usual.

This cycle would continue on and off. The father would swear off alcohol because he does not like the results of his drinking.

Signs of Alcoholism

What we have now is an alcoholic with no alcohol in his system trying to live life with untreated alcoholism. He becomes what is refered to as a "dry drunk". An unmanageable human mess not in control of any thoughts, feelings or actions - out of control.

Street Angel - Home Devil

He would beat the kids black and blue with a garden hose because they do not conform to his perfectionist ideals, or because they choose to have a mind of their own.

The mother would cop it too.

The family gets treated like dirt while friends, family and even strangers get treated like royalty. He is a Street Angel and Home Devil.

If alcoholism goes untreated, it is only a matter of time before the alcoholic picks up a drink again. So he picks up a drink again and the cycle continues. A cycle of living hell, terror and torment for the mother, children and obviously himself.

Of course the children could have been spared this torment if the mother would have left him. But, the mother suffered from another disease. The disease of co-dependency. Her disease told her to stay in the dangerous situation.

Lucky for her and the children the father died at an early age before the children became teenagers.

Were these children effected by alcoholism?

One does not need to have a mind like Albert Einstein to comprehend that a harmful butterfly effect did take place. All the books about the love and nurturing of small children tell us that loud noises, parents arguing and violence do not produce healthy personalities.

The children do not know much about this because loud noises, arguing and violence happened almost every day. The abnormal became the normal.

So does Alcoholism Effect Children?

Even though the children did not drink alcohol at that early age, they were, and over 30 years later still are affected by the disease of alcoholism.

What were the effects?

Spiritual, emotional and mental dis-ease.
